How often will I need to replace my oasis humidifier? I live in the midwest where the summers are muggy. I was only planning to use the humidfier in the winter when the heat is on and the house gets super dry. Is it okay to let the oasis dry out in the summer when I don't use it? Or will drying it out render it unusable?

The Oasis humidifier is reusable as long as it does not become damaged. If the humidity is such that you dont need to use the Oasis for part of the year, it is recommended that you wash out the Humigel crystals that are inside of the humidifier and lightly screw on the cap so it is slightly loose. Because the lining of the Oasis is only 1/1000th of an inch thick it is easy to damage the lining if the humidifier is allowed to dry up and shrink onto itself and become stuck to the dry crystals. When you go to use it during the dry months it is possible to damage the lining when you pull it apart to bring it back to its original shape.
Refills and instructions can be found on the Oasis website (http://oasishumidifiers.com/humigel.html)
The refill packs are very inexpensive and give you enough Humigel crystals to last you for years. A good humidifier is important for the long term care of your instruments and taking care of the tools that take care of your instrument is just as important. Aloha!

First, the information about replacing the crystals is great.
However, I have a different solution:
At the end of the heating season, fill your Oasis with water as usual, drop it in a sandwich baggie, remove excess air, and seal the baggie. It will still be fully hydrated when heating season arrives again. I have been doing this for many years with guitar humidifiers.
